Özet
With the understanding of modern education, one of the Fundamental characteristics that a grown-up person is expected to have is, being a high level thinker. Throughout history philosophers, educators, and many others have been emphasizing the importance of thinking skills for people to deal with a rapidly changing and developing world. Thinking skills are crucial for professional and social life. Thinking skills education also affects academic achievement of the students. Students are engaged in higher-order thinking when they visualize a problem by diagramming it, separate relevant from irrelevant information in a word problem, seek reasons and causes, justify solutions, see more than one side of a problem, weight sources of information based on their credibility, reveal assumptions in reasoning. and identify bias or logica| inconsistencies. ln order to nurture and develop these skills, thinking education programs have been created, This study deals with foundations of thinking skills. general approaches to the teaching of thinking skills and applying thinking skills programs to gifted and talented students in order to meet their high order thinking needs (academic and cognitive] in the classroom. Teachers can provide opportunities for thinking skills education for gifted students in the reguIar classroom or as part of a gifted program, Thinking skills require either critical thinking, creative thinking, problem solving and decision making skills. Teaching to higher-order thinking requires more work from the teacher. Higher-order thinking takes considerable time to develop through lots of practice in different contexts. The study not only addresses to literature on thinking skills but also offers a range of activities for fostering thinking skills which will bridge the gap between theory and practice.
