One important direction is that of applying thermodynamical formalism (entropy, pressure, inverse pressure) to study various metric properties of fractals obtained from iterations of hyperbolic maps on basic sets. For example inverse pressure helps us estimate the Hausdorff dimension of fractal intersections in the basic set.
