    Final year students of nursing job anxiety and hopelessness level

    AIM: This study was carried out on final year students of nursing, to determine the effect level of anxiety caused by the hopelessness of not finding a job. METHOD: The creation of this descriptive and relational study was made by final year students of a nursing college in a government university. The sampling method was not used in the study and creation was completely reached. A sample of 134 students who accepted to participate in the study was formed. The data collection tool included a 14-item descriptive information form, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and Beck Hopelessness Scale. Necessary permits were obtained from the Human Research Ethics Committee of Social Sciences for the study while a written informed consent was obtained from the students who agreed to participate in the study. FINDINGS: In this study, it was determined that; 76.9% of the students were female, 46.3% were within 20-21 age range, 50.7% were living in the dormitory, 70.1% had same expenses as their income, and 56% of them shared similar success in their academic achievement. While 60.4% of them chose the nursing profession voluntarily, 50.7% of them did chose to nurse by themselves with a consultant, 88.8% did not work, 66.4% of them were worried about finding a job, 76.9% of them wanted to work right after graduation, 57.5% wanted to work immediately in order to achieve economic freedom and 32.1% thought they could find a job in 6-11 months period. The mean scores of the state anxiety scores of the students were 40.59 ± 5.80, the mean scores of trait anxiety scores were 46.44 ± 5.59 and the mean despair score was 4.95 ± 4.05. In the study, since it was determined that there was a statistically significant difference in the distribution of hopelessness (X2:0,175; p=0.000) and trait anxiety scores (X2:0,085; p<0.05), and there was no statistically significant difference in the distribution of nonparametric and state anxiety scores X2:0,069; p>0.05)) in statistical procedures, parametric tests were used in statistical procedures. In the study, it was established that despair scores differ according to the place where students live X2:6.003; p?0.05); The despair score (5,7500 ± 3.07) of those living with their families is higher than those living alone at home (5,1081 ± 3.79), living in the dormitory (4,6029 ± 4.52) and those living at home with their friends. The despair scores were also different according to job selection (U:1668.00; p?0.05); especially despair scores (5,7925 ± 4.08) are higher for those who unintentionally choose the profession, despair scores differ (X2:11.07; p?0.05);) according to the period for job planning, those who think that they can find work within 24-36 months have higher despair scores (7,7143 ± 4,69) than those who said they will find work in less than 6 months, 6-11 months, 12-23 months, 36 months and more. It was established that there is no significant difference between the state and trait anxiety score according to gender, age, living place, income, academic achievement, nursing status, influential person in a selection of department, time of planning to find work. While a negative correlation was found between the scores of the despair scale and the state anxiety scale scores, there was a positive and negative correlation with the trait anxiety scale. RESULT: It was found in this study that, the despair score is different according to the variable of the place where a person lives, according to the preference of nursing variable and the time that the person plans to find a job. There is also a very weak negative relationship between scores of despair scale and state anxiety scale scores. While there is a weak and statistically no relation between positive orientation with trait anxiety scale.
