A review of the ımpact of ınformal digital learning of english on EFL students’ willingness to communicate / İngilizce’nin örgün öğrenme dışındaki dijital öğreniminin yabancı dil olarak ingilizce öğrenen öğrencilerin ingilizce iletişim kurma istekliliği üzerindeki etkisine ilişkin bir inceleme
(T.C. Maltepe Üniversitesi, 2025) Andaç, Hanen Naz
This brief literature review aims to underscore the importance of informal digital learning of English (IDLE) on EFL learners’ willingness to communicate (WTC) in English. Starting with a review of foundational theories and early studies on WTC, this paper draws on a range of recent studies examining the relationship between IDLE and language learners’ WTC. The review highlights the positive influence IDLE has on learners’ autonomy, confidence, motivation and engagement with English. In addition, it was found that language learners who took part in IDLE achieved higher academic success. The findings suggest that informal digital environments and interactions, including social media and games, play a significant role in reducing language learners’ boredom and anxiety, thereby encouraging more frequent communication in English. The review concludes that employing IDLE and integrating elements of IDLE into formal language instruction could enhance the overall learning experience and result in achieving more learning outcomes. This paper discusses the ways in which language instructors can encourage IDLE activities.

Representations of violence crosscutting gender in the works of Eavan Boland / Eavan Boland’ın şiirlerinde toplumsal cinsiyet ile kesişen şiddet temsilleri
(T.C. Maltepe Üniversitesi, 2025) Pelivan Cemgil, Gözde
Eavan Boland (1944-2020), a prominent voice in contemporary Irish poetry, paved the way for a new era for the next generations of poets through her treatment of the concept of violence. While looking retrospectively at the turning points in Irish history and making her own private space visible to her readers, Boland addresses the concept of violence on a gendered basis. Boland’s intellectual radar captures the period of Irish nation-building and the political and ethnic conflict in Northern Ireland from the late 1960s to 1998. Boland juxtaposes the socially experienced violence in these decades with everyday life experiences. Thus, the boundary between public and private spheres disappears in her poetry. According to Boland, from a gender perspective, the heroic ideal created in the face of violence excludes “the heroine” in Irish history. Accordingly, this paper problematizes how Boland handles violence on grounds of gender. To address this question, this paper examines the following four poems in turn: “The War Horse”, “Suburban Woman”, “In Her Own Image”, and “Domestic Violence”. In these poems, Boland identifies violence as a social experience which cannot be excluded from the private sphere and portrays it as an intertwined material with everyday experiences of the feminine subject.

A literature review on the effects of Youtube, Instagram, Twitter (X) and Facebook on vocabulary enhancement / YouTube, Instagram, Twitter (X) ve Facebook'un kelime bilgisi gelişimine etkisi üzerine bir literatür taraması
(T.C. Maltepe Üniversitesi, 2025) Cantez, Serra
This study aimed to discover the impact of certain social media platforms’ use on EFL learners’ vocabulary acquisition and learning. It followed a literature review design and observed experimental, pre-experimental and action research starting from the year 2014 on the aforementioned subject. The outcome of the studies selected were observed in three different categories namely the impact of visual-audio based social media platforms (Instagram and Youtube), the impact of text based social media platforms (Twitter/X) and the impact of visualaudio and text based social media platforms (Facebook) on the vocabulary learning success of EFL learners. The outcome of the review of studies favored social media platforms which predominantly made use of visual-audio content (Youtube and Instagram) while text based social media platforms (Twitter) displayed a lower success. However, combining visual-audio and text-based platforms also promised efficiency. Furthermore, an increased vocabulary acquisition in cases which included social media utilization alongside classroom activities like reading activities was observed. Finally, once the total of the studies reviewed are taken into consideration, improvement of vocabulary was especially observed in cases which learners were active creators of content on social media through appropriate guidance; and the sole consumption of content on these platforms were not found as efficient.

From home to prison: The breakdown of the family unit in Martin McDonagh’s the beauty queen of Leenane / Evden zindana: Martin McDonagh’ın Leenane’in güzellik kraliçesi oyununda aile biriminin çöküşü
(T.C. Maltepe Üniversitesi, 2025) Erkoç Iqbal, Seçil
As the inaugural play in The Leenane Triology, The Beauty Queen of Leenane has a distinct place in Martin McDonagh’s writing career. Premiering at the Town Hall Theatre in Galway on February 1, 1996, the play explores the unsettling relationship between seventy-year-old Mag and her forty-year-old daughter Maureen, set within the ostensibly secure confines of their rural home – a space that merely ‘appears’ insulated from the anxieties and threats of the external world. Still, as the play unfolds, it becomes obvious that the true menace resides within. The source of this internal danger is the tension between the mother and the daughter, as they are ‘chained’ to each other by invisible bonds, thereby transforming this domestic sphere into a ‘torture room’ marked by emotional and physical destruction. The play culminates in matricide, committed by Maureen, who, driven by trauma and emotional degradation, ultimately begins to mirror her mother’s persona. This convergence erodes the distinction between the two characters and subverts the traditional connotations of the home as a space of comfort and stability. Accordingly, this study aims to examine the disintegration of the foundational ideals such as home, family, faith, and identity through a close reading of the fractured relationship between Mag and Maureen.
