Devina MarieIn the context of new and developing countries, many technological improvements arise while destructing our environment in the process. It is therefore the duty of every designers to provide a place for man to live in comfort with less impact to the environment. The Philippines, located near the equator, is considered as one of the many tropical countries that has two seasons, sunny and rainy. Most Filipinos cannot afford to build their own house lest hire an architect to design it thus for those who want to proceed in building one choose what is affordable and conventional way of construction without popper consultation from the professionals. However, majority these houses are often poorly ventilated and of poor quality. Being in tropics, this results in excessive use of artificial ventilation using large amount of energy consumption per household. Balay, is a Filipino word for simple house, while Hayahay is also a Filipino term which means relaxed. To address the common long-running problems of every Filipino household, which are the high cost of building a house, excessive heat inside the house due to hot, humid weather, and high energy consumptions, the researchers proposed a simple affordable housing design adopting energy efficient methods by utilizing the following; Proper orientation in the Philippine setting for passive cooling; sustainability through usage of vernacular materials, rainwater collection and using solar lights and energy to name some.
