Yayın In sickness and out of stealth: the chronic disease as inspiration in Dickinson’s and Henley’s poetry(Maltepe Üniversitesi, 2019) Belaid, Mohammed AmineGreat minds, ones that are supposed to think alike, diverge from the rational mainstream of acceptance to turn what is considered as an endless quagmire into a favorable situation of their own. By the same token, the literary genius is often divulged to the world after a hard labor, especially when the stimuli are health issues that sometimes aggravate to chronic diseases. This paper explores the role of incessant illnesses – namely tuberculosis and migraine – in triggering the literary wit of the two renowned poets William Ernest Henley and Emily Dickinson, and the contribution of their health predicaments to the creation of defiant poets who prevailed through their writings. The scars turned strengths are eloquently depicted in Henley’s Invictus (1888) and Dickinson’s I Felt a Funeral, in My Brain (1896), where traits of the sicknesses are alluded to by the poets. As the presentation concludes, the audience should reach an understanding of the influence of chronic diseases on triggering both Henley’s and Dickinson’s literary genius.
