Yayın Assesment of the knowledge, attitudes and practices among the healthcare workers regarding hand hygiene rules(Maltepe Üniversitesi, 2019) Berezhna, A.; Nechyporuk, I.Introduction: The hand hygiene (HH) is important issue in prevention of health care associated infection. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 50 healthcare workers (HCW) in multidisciplinary hospital in Kharkiv, Ukraine, in March 2019. Data was collected using HH knowledge, attitudes and practices questionnaire. Data processing was performed using Microsoft Excel 2007. Results: Eighteen doctors (36%), 26 nurses (52%), 6 laboratory assistants (12%) were enrolled in this study. All respondents (100%) confirmed that HH guidelines are available and HCW are sure they follow the rules. But 32% of respondents (n=16) do not regularly follow the HH rules referring to the fact that the needs of patients have priority. 12% of respondents (n=6) noted that HH causes irritation and dryness of the skin. 70% of the respondents (n=35) mistakenly thought that the use of an antiseptic handrub was more harmful than the use of water and soap. Only 4% of HCW (n=2) correctly named all the key points for preventing the contact dermatitis (using of less irritating HH products, avoiding certain practices that increase the risk of skin irritation; and using moisturizing skin care products following hand cleansing). Two respondents (4%) indicated that they did not consider HH so important. 4% of respondents indicated lack of soap or alcoholbased handrubs as the reason for non-compliance with the HH rules. Discussion: Systematic review (Allegranzi B. et al., 2011) reported the low compliance rates by HCW infection in developing countries. In our study HCW had high level of HH knowledge and moderate level of attitude and practice. HH training programs should be directed to improving HH attitude and practices. Discussion: Study showed insufficient level of HH attitude and practices of HCW that require the improvement of HH training programs with a focus on practical skills.
