Yayın Environmentally induced migration: in the need of the international system(Maltepe Üniversitesi, 2016) Christensen, Daniel BranislavThere is a growing acknowledgement of the fact that the effects of climate change most likely will lead to more migration, both internaIly and internationally, in the coming future. This paper reviews existing research and empirical evidence of the impact of environmental and climate change on migration patterns, highlighting two distinct types, namely rapid-and slow-onset disasters. lt examines and discusses current legal and policy frameworks, and institutional roles and responsibilities, relating to the concept of 'environmental migrant'. Given the fact that it is a controversial academic topic, especially as to the lack of reliable global datasets, this paper argues that future research needs to recognize the multi causality of environmental-related movement, but not ignoring the increasing influence of environmental factors in the migratory process. Thus, the people displaced within and/or abroad their home country due to environmental reasons needs legal protection from the international system. The study recommends a number of policy measures, and suggests that human rights can act as a useful normative framework to design new or to amend existing laws and policies.
