    Investigatıon of the evidence-based practices of the nurses in evaluating the pain in inpatients

    AIM: This study was carried out as a descriptive study in a university hospital in Hatay between 2019 January 1-15 in order to determine the evidence-based applications of the nurses working in internal and surgical units. METHODS: The study uses a descriptive and cross-sectional research method. 37 nurses that accepted to join the research composed the sample group. During data collection, Nurses Information Form, The Nurses’ Knowledge and Behavior Questionnaire about pain were used. Results: 24.3 of the nurses had not received training on pain. 67% wanted to be trained about pain. 75.7% thought that the pain was the responsibility of the nurse, 97.3% used the pain scale in the clinic, and the scales used were 73.0% facial pain scale, 51.4% verbal pain intensity scale, 40.5% numerical rating pain scale, 35.1% visual analog pain scale. While the nurses describe the pain of the patient, 91.9% the severity of the pain, 83.8% localization, 64.9% expression, 59.5% characteristics, 56.8% beginning time of pain, 54.1% heart rate of patients and 51.4% effects on the patient. The majority of the nurses (64.3%) evaluated the patient’s pain in 8 hours. 38.9% of nurses have problems in dealing with patients pain. These problems include 45.9% workload, 21.6% absence of physician cooperation, 18.96% patient lack of cooperation, 16.2% worry about side effects of drugs, 16.2% insufficient drug demand. Half of the nurses make the pain evaluation “by observing the patient behavior” and “asking for the pain intensity”. The methods used to relieve pain are 100% ordered analgesia, 43.2% position, 37.8% placebo, 21.6% attention to other direction, 10.8% cold application 8.1% hot application, 5.4% massage. CONCLUSION: As a result of this research it was found that the majority of the nurses used pain assessment scales, but the majority of the patients did not use nonpharmacological methods other than the ordered medication, and the patient experienced problems due to the lack of workload, physician-nurse-patient lack of adequate cooperation.
