Yayın Relationship of excessive worry, anxiety control and thought suppression wıth psychological well-being: a comparative study of young and older Pakistani adults(Maltepe Üniversitesi, 2019) Jamshed, NidaThis research aimed to compare the excessive worrying, perceived control on anxiety and though suppression among young and older adults of Pakistan. The study explored the variation among two groups and checked the impact of study variables on psychological wellbeing of individuals. The sample size was (N=215) adults and data was collected using purposive and convenient sampling. It was purely quantitative and cross-sectional study. All the measures used were translated in Urdu by using forward and backward translation method. The Penn State Worry questionnaire was used to measure excessive worrying, White Bear Suppression inventory to assess thought suppression and Anxiety Control questionnaire to assess perceived control over anxiety related events. The findings revealed that a positive relationship exist between thought suppression and excessive worrying (r=.31***), and a negative relationship between thought suppression and perceived control on anxiety (r=-.40**). Furthermore, excessive worrying has a negative relationship with perceived control on anxiety (r=-.58**). The t-test analysis showed that young women are more excessive worriers than men while men have high control on anxiety related events as compared to women. No significant differences in excessive worry and perceived control on anxiety were found for young and older adults. Findings also demonstrated that individuals with more control over anxiety related events and thought suppression have better psychological well-being than individuals with poor control on both. It is suggested that individuals must be taught different techniques of controlling anxieties, managing their worries and process of thought suppression in order to have better psychological health.
