    This paper explores a noticeable innovation trend in the perception of the role of paintings in art, cfeating a level of tension heretofore not seen between the artistic and economic the individual colIector and public viewer, as well as values and trends of gallery owners and painting buyers in the current art market. lnvestigated is this tension and it is posed that the possible consequence of these dynamics could make art irrelevant if it becomes solely a branch of luxury goods.
