Yayın Industrialization and Modernization in the Last Ottoman Era: The Case of Beykoz Settlement(Hacettepe Univ, 2022) Kustemir, Sibel Kaya; Oktik, NurgunHistory and sociology are two fields that exist together. While sociology analyzes the present through historical facts and events, it considers the historical realities, structural changes and transformations as the basic starting point. From this point of view, understanding the historical flow is important for understanding the sociological structures. In line with these two flows, after examining the change and industrialization efforts in the Ottoman Empire during the Industrialization Revolution, which affected the whole World and is the main transformation point of modern society, this article will briefly examine the place and importance of Beykoz, which had an important place in industrialization, in respect of the industrialization movements in the 19th century. Thus, the first section of the article discusses the industrialization policies of the Ottoman Empire and the changes that occurred in its economic structure due to the effects of the internal and external dynamics, in the 19th century. The second section summarizes the industrial enterprise inaugurated in Beykoz, which has an important place in the industrialization movement of the Ottoman Empire. Then, it will show how this change was carried over from the Empire to the new Republic. In the conclusion section, it was sought to prove how the unplanned construction in Beykoz was a result of the existence, in the historical process, of the factories inaugurated by the initiatives of both the State and the private undertakings, and the unplanned migration and population growth rate formed with the created workforce. In the recent period, the transfer of the industry to the country upon the urbanization has caused a new migration wave with migration of the population working at the factories, thereby resulting again in the structural changes. Beykoz has transformed from a homogeneous structure where the working class lived, to a heterogeneous structure with an urban middle-class population, due to its location in Istanbul.
