Yayın Artificial intelligence - threat or friend of law profession ?(Maltepe Üniversitesi, 2019) Onica, CristianMany of us have seen highly uncomfortable headlines like “The robot lawyers are here - and they’re winning” 1 or “Lawyers could be next profession to be replaced by computers” 2 . It seems that it used to be an overhyped topic during 2017- 2018, now these kinds of headlines get replaced by “Why AI Could Never Substitute A Lawyer”. As Pedro Domingos stated in his book 3 , AI often revolves around the use of algorithms. An algorithm is a set of unambiguous instructions that a mechanical computer can execute. A complex algorithm is often built on top of other, simpler, algorithms. The true fact about AI algorithms is that it learns from data, they are capable to enhance “themselves” by learning new heuristics, this means that it will always try to create a pattern of actions that work well according to preprogrammed algorithm. I have to agree that AI is capable of replacing a significant amount of basic work done by any representative of law profession but there will be foolish to state that an algorithm in near present will be better in any way than a law professional. Unfortunately, or happily, ROSS, is now just an assistant for any progressive lawyer from US and it is probably the best at being just an assistant.
