Emotion regulation is one of the most principal components of the human development and it has a vital role while focusing on relationships and well-being (Langlois, 2004; Karreman, 2012). Tracking, interpreting and transformation of emotional experience and emotional expression are components of emotion regulation contains moderating behaviour in circumstance of experiencing dense emotional excitation (Thompson, 1994; Gratz & Roemer, 2004). Highlighting the significant role of emotion types is beneficial for understanding the strategies of emotion regulation and it has been pointed out that different emotions elicit diverse responses acquired from individuals (Dixon-Gordon, Aldao & Reyes, 2015). Although considering the emotion type and emotion expression are relevant concepts for understanding emotion regulation, only a few studies evaluated both of these two concepts together and the existing studies evaluated more than one type of negative emotions together which refrains to focus one type of emotion in detail. The purpose of this study is to evaluate how individuals use emotion regulation strategies in context of sadness, and to analyze emotional expression diversities of females and males. This study was conducted as being based on qualitative research method. In-depth interview technique was used to gather information from 30 participants. It can be stated that individuals share a common perspective which highlights the importance of the expression of emotions due to the various attributions as to feel relief or need for other individuals’ reflection on their emotions but emotion expression of positive feelings is preferable rather than sharing negative feelings due to the individual justifications as displaying its easiness or not intending to other individuals interfere with their emotional processes.
