Seroepidemiology of hepatitis viruses, measles, mumps, rubella and varicella among healthcare workers and students: Should we screen before vaccination?
(ELSEVIER SCIENCE LONDON, 2020) Karadeniz, Asli; Alasehir, Elcin Akduman
Background: Health care workers (HCWs) and students are at increased risk for blood borne infections and vaccine preventable diseases (VPDs). The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of antibodies against measles, rubella, mumps, varicella zoster virus (VZV), hepatitis A and B viruses among HCWs and students and to determine whether there are differences according to gender and age group. Methods: Information about characteristics of the 1053 participants, history of disease and vaccination status were collected using a structured questionnaire. Serum samples were tested for antibodies by commercial immunoenzymatic assays. Results: Seropositivity rates were 57.1% for measles, 74% for mumps, 96.3% for rubella, 93.7% for VZV, 33.9% for hepatitis A virus and 92.2% for hepatitis B virus. Susceptibility rates among participants 18-26, 27-38 and >38 years of age were statistically significant for measles (46%, 18.6% and 0%; p < 0.001) and mumps (27.1%, 12.9% and 21.4%; p < 0.05), respectively. Conclusion: Low seropositivity rates for measles, mumps and HAV are important findings. For other diseases other than VZV, it is thought that vaccination without pre-screening is more appropriate. Healthcare institutions should have policies for screening and vaccination of their staff and students. (C) 2020 The Authors. Modeling the p-?-behavior of single friction pile in compacted fine-grained soils
(Taylor and Francis - Balkema, 2014) Taylan Kutlu Z.N.; Vanapalli S.K.; Han Z.
In this paper, the contribution of the matric suction towards the shaft bearing capacity of a single pile loaded in a compacted fine-grained soil (i.e. Indian Head till) is investigated based on the load-displacement (i.e. p-?-) relationships derived from both model pile tests and Finite Element Analyses (FEA). The FEA are undertaken using the commercial software SIGMA/W. A modulus of elasticity model and a modified Mohr-Coulomb yield surface function that consider the contribution of the matric suction are jointly used in the FEA to formulate an elastic-perfectly plastic constitutive model. There is a reasonable agreement between the p-?- relationships modeled from the FEA and measured from model pile tests. Both measured and modeled results suggest that there is a significant contribution of the matric suction towards the shaft bearing capacity of single piles in compacted fine-grained soils. © 2014 Taylor & Francis Group.

Melatonin & zinc for age management
    (Turkiye Klinikleri, 2009) Öztürk G.
Why do we age? Why do some people seem to age faster than others? Aging results from a complex interplay between multiple different mechanisms. Over the years, researchers have put forth several theories of aging. The most widely accepted theories on the mechanism of aging are error theories and program theories. Melatonin is the main neurohormone of the pineal gland. The pineal gland shrinks with age, so melatonin production declines as we age. The pineal gland is directly involved in the aging process. Being a powerful antioxidant, melatonin may act against age-related oxidative damage. Zinc (Zn) is an essential trace element. Zn levels also decrease with age. The pineal gland is involved in Zn metabolism. The effect of melatonin on immune functions is partly attributed to an interaction with Zn. Melatonin and Zn treatment in old mice restored the reduced immunological functions. There is a tight relationship between melatonin and Zn. Melatonin and Zn supplementation may postpone aging. Effect of Cu and Li addition on the electrical properties of KNN ceramics
    (2010) Mensur Alkoy E.; Berksoy A.
In this study, effects of copper oxide addition and lithium modification on the properties of potassium sodium niobate (K0.5Na 0.5)NbO3 - KNN ceramics were investigated. XRD phase analysis showed that all samples crystallized in pure perovskite phase. CuO addition and Li modification was found to enhance densification of KNN samples. CuO addition was found to lead to higher coupling coefficient (kp) and mechanical quality factor (Qm), whereas Li modification caused an increase in dielectric constant and piezoelectric charge coefficient (d 33), and stabilization of the tetragonal phase below room temperature. © 2010 IEEE.

Management of Low Powered Personal Area Networks Using Compression in SNMPv3
(IEEE Computer Society, 2019) Turk Y.; Akman A.
The internet of things (IoT) is being used more and more in our lives and this area attracts interest in studying new methods. One of these methods is mesh networking technique, which is increasingly becoming more popular and is suitable for use in places where wired connectivity is unavailable. Researchers are mostly focused on developing new and efficient services for systems running on this method, but the management of devices on mesh networks remains as an important issue. The management of an increasing number of devices can become inexhaustible. IoT management is to monitor and take action on the communication from and between connected devices and also control the devices from a remote server. This is similar to traditional network management when mesh network devices are considered. There is also a critical precaution for objects which is to complete administrative operations securely. In this article we have adapted a protocol, that is mainly used in traditional network management, for using in the management low powered personal area network (LoWPAN). We made some experimental analysis and compared our approach with other well-known IoT protocols for device management perspective. © 2018 IEEE.

A New Compact CMOS Realization of Sinusoidal Oscillator Using a Single Modified CBTA
(BRUNO UNIV TECHNOL, DEPT RADIO ELECTRONICS, 2011) Herencsar, Norbert; Koton, Faroslav; Vrba, Kamil; Lahiri, Abhirup; Ayten, Umut E.; Sagbas, Mehmet; Dufek, I; Dusek, M; Fedra, Z; Fryza, T; Jakubova, I; Polak, L; Sebestova, D; Slanina, M; Sramek, P; Vsetula, P; Wolansky, D; Zachar, J
In this paper, a new compact realization of sinusoidal oscillator using modified current backward transconductance amplifier (MCBTA) is reported. The proposed circuit employs a single MCBTA and four passive components including two grounded capacitors. The circuit provides completely de-coupled condition of oscillation (CO) of the frequency of oscillation (FO), i.e. no term in the CO is present in the FO and vice versa. Both the CO and FO are independently tunable by two different grounded resistors. The FO is also tunable by means of the transconductance and thereby is electronically tunable. SPICE simulation results have confirmed the workability of the proposed circuit.

Structural equation modeling for analyzing the barriers and benefits of e-procurement
    (Newswood Limited, 2014) Toktaş-Palut P.; Baylav E.; Teoman S.; Altunbey M.
We perform an empirical study to analyze whether it would be beneficial for a company to switch from traditional procurement system to e-procurement system. For this purpose, we determine the main barriers and benefits of e-procurement systems, and using Structural Equation Modeling, we analyze the effects of the barriers and benefits on the e-procurement adoption decision. The results denote that barriers (benefits) of e-procurement systems have negative (positive) effect on the adoption decision. We also find that the effect of the benefits is higher than that of the barriers, indicating that it would be beneficial for the company to adopt the e-procurement system. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

Impact of feature selection for corpus-based WSD in Turkish
    (2006) Orhan Z.; Altan Z.
Word sense disambiguation (WSD) is an important intermediate stage for many natural language processing applications, The senses of an ambiguous word are the classification of usages for that word. WSD is basically a mapping function from a context to a set of applicable senses depending on various parameters. Resource selection, determination of senses for ambiguous words, decision of effective features, algorithms, and evaluation criteria are the major issues in a WSD system, This paper deals with the feature selection strategies for word sense disambiguation task in Turkish language, There are many different features that can contribute to the meaning of a word. These features can vary according to the metaphorical usages, POS of the word, pragmatics, etc, The observations indicated that detecting the critical features can contribute much than the learning methodologies. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

SNR-based relay selection scheme for cooperative relay networks
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2015) Aydin E.; Illian H.
In this paper, a cooperative relaying scheme where optimum threshold value based relay selection algorithm is considered for decode and forward (DF) based cooperative relaying networks is proposed over the Nakagami-m fading channels. Relay selection scheme with optimum threshold value is an effective method to decrease the error propagations that occur at the relays due to detection errors. In order to decrease performance degradation due to error propagations in DF based cooperative relaying networks and increase the error performance of the system, virtual noise (VN), MRC and cooperative-MRC (C-MRC) based detection techniques with the optimal threshold value based relay selection are considered. Functions of optimum threshold value for the considered techniques are derived theoretically. © 2015 IEEE.

New MOS-C realization of transadmittance type all-pass filter using modified CBTA
    (2011) Herencsar N.; Lahiri A.; Koton J.; Sagbas M.; Ayten U.E.; Vrba K.
This paper reports a new CMOS realization of transadmittance type first-order all-pass filter using an active building block called modified current backward transconductance amplifier (MCBTA). With a simple matching condition, the proposed filter can be created using only one MCBTA, one grounded capacitor, and one grounded resistor, which leads to a compact circuit implementation. The current output available at high-output impedance terminal enables simple cascadibility to subsequent current-mode circuits. Using 0.35 µm TSMC CMOS technology parameters, SPICE simulation results have validated the workability of the proposed circuit. © 2011 University of West Bohemi.

Bayesian-based iterative blind joint data detection, code delay and channel estimation for DS-CDMA systems in multipath environments
    (2011) Aydin E.; Cirpan H.A.
This work proposes a novel iterative blind receiver to jointly estimate channel parameters and transmitted data sequence on the multipath fading channel in Direct Sequence Code Division Multiple Access (DS CDMA) systems. Since time delay of the transmission channel represents nonlinear characteristic, joint estimation of these parameters and data sequence is difficult for multipath fading channels. To derive of the proposed iterative method we used completely Bayesian approach and then, Sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) technique is adapted to proposed method. © 2011 IEEE.

Investigation of urban growth effects on forest area by creating different simulation scenarios
(International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, 2018) Ayazli I.E.; Baslik S.; Yakup A.E.; Gul F.K.; Kotay D.; Gultekin M.
It is necessary to keep urban growth under control according to the understanding of sustainable urban management in rapidly growing cities. In other words, sustainable urban management requires estimating how the land cover will change and in which direction the urbanization will be in the coming years, as well as knowing the current structures of the cities. Therefore, simulation models are frequently used for monitoring urban growth. The results of simulation models help to obtain background information that will be the basis for the formation of a "sustainable urban life" by allowing the determination of the natural areas that can face the threat of urbanization. The cadastral structure is one of the basic variables affecting the growth of a city. Therefore, the purpose of the study is to investigate urban growth by producing cadastral parcel-based simulation models. The land cover data required to create a simulation model were generated from cadastral maps and land registry data, in four different time periods. Within the scope of the study, cellular automata-based urban growth simulation models for the years 2030, 2050 and 2070 were produced, and the land cover changes that occurred in Sancaktepe were investigated. © Authors 2018. Word sense disambiguation for semantic applications
    (2006) Orhan Z.; Altan Z.
Natural language processing (NLP) has become the most significant obstacle that has been restricting the applications via the web. Today, very little of the content on the web can be understood by the machines, although vast amount of electronic information has been kept on them. Word sense disambiguatio (WSD) is an important intermediate step in many language processin applications. It is basically a mapping function from the context to the set of senses. This function has many parameters that are difficult to explore. The factors effecting the success of WSD systems are generally very sensitive to these parameters. The issues in WSD are examined in the context of Turkish WSD application. Ambiguous words and their sense classifications have been establishe and by providing manually sense tagged corpora and examining WSD problem from various perspectives, an important contribution has been achieved for the researches in this domain.
