Kıbrıs’ta yaz sıcağı çekilmez olabilir, öyle ki bazen işinizi ya sabahın erken saatlerinde ya da akşam geç vakitte halletmeniz gerekir. Herhalde, 15 Temmuz 1974’te de durum farklı değildi. Siyasetin havası daha bile sıcaktı, zira Kıbrıs Rum Kesimi Millî Muhafız Ordusu bir darbe yapmış, daha şafak sökmeden Makarios’u alaşağı etmişti, Yunanistan’a bağlı birlikler de bu duruma göz yummakla yetinmişti. 1959-60’ta varılan uluslararası mutabakatlara göre adada kısa bir süreliğine Kıbrıs Cumhuriyeti kurulmuş, adaya da Yunan askeri konuşlanmıştı.
Summer heat in Cyprus can be quite unbearable during the day, and you would have to get your things done either in early morning hours or late in the evening. Apparently, the 15th of July 1974 was no exception. The political climate was even hotter on that day as the Greece-backed regiments of the Greek Cypriot National Guard in connivance with Greece’s own troops executed a coup by which they ousted Makarios before dawn.
