Özet

This work aims at investigations in the AIDS disease in Turkey as a social phenomenon from the viewpoint of the social sciences. Whereas in medical d,scourse AIDS is only dealt with as a disease, it is handled here as popular discourse in light of Bourdieu's social construction view and Eco and Laclau's binary opposition view. During this research, three d,fferent research methods were employed: (1) news related to AIDS in the Turkish Press between November 1, 1993 and January 31, 1994 was subjected to x2 analysis, with most news qualitatively classified as meical or popular discourse and according to whether the news was originally domestic or foreign; (2) audio-visual symbols were examined; and (3) the different terms used by the students of the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Communication in describing AIDS were subjected to discourse analysis. In assessing these differing types, we used judgment, explanation, sampling, and uncertainty as our criteria. Based upon these criteria, correlations were established between the knowledge levels of the different testees (low-average-high). To see whether AIDS will influence interpersonal communication forms, free associations of students about the subject were requested.
