Özet
A healthy individual develops internal urge to contribute to society. The mainstream form of contribution encouraged by current global society is through employment. This idea encourages women's participation in the workforce, perceiving it as the peak of human productivity. In accordance with this view, many nations evaluate women's welfare and nation's development through female labor participation. In 2021, the Republic of Yemen was one of the countries with the lowest female labor participation in the world. The data leads to allegations that Yemen restricts women's participation in society. This paper aims to investigate perceived gender roles in Yemeni society. As a phenomenological study, this research utilizes qualitative method. A semi-structured in-depth interview is conducted with five Yemenis women. The data is interpreted using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). This study challenges the embedded belief about women's employment and seeks to provide an alternative form of social contribution. This study is expected to promote public awareness that women's contribution needs to be seen beyond economic purposes.
