Özet

The Earthen Town of Raghbah in Saudi Arabia is a perfect, surviving example of a historical city in the Arabian desert. Presently, it is uninhabited and almost all of its buildings need restoration, re-purposing, and preservation. Raghbah can become a model for the entire desert region of Najd (northern part of Saudi Arabia) to demonstrate that Earthen Architecture is a feasible, affordable, durable, cost-effective, environment-friendly construction method in our times. Following a comprehensive program of restoration, Raghbah City will be ready to be inhabited again, and its buildings will be fit to be used for the following purposes: - Residential (houses, villas) - Education (nurseries, schools, institutes) - Culture (libraries, cultural centers) - Health (clinics, health centers. labs) - Public Administration (municipality) - Tourism (youth hostels) - Trade (bazaar or souq area / taking into consideration the fact that the city lies on the main road linking Riyadh with Hail) Raghbah is a town located at a distance of 130 km Northwest of Riyadh; it was built in 1669 CE (1079 Hijri), which means that the city is approximately 350 years old. Taking into consideration the tumultuous history of the region and the wars that took place, one can conclude that the Earthen City of Najd passed the durability time test successfully. As a matter of fact, all main architectural elements and traits of the Najd Desert can be found in the small, uninhabited Raghbah. One of Raghbah's major architectural elements is Mirqab Tower, a watchtower; its physical dimensions are 22 m in height and a diameter of 4700 mm at the lower parts and 1700mm at the very top. Built with the rammed earth technique, the 3.5 centuries long structure was greatly damaged in mid-late 2015 due to very heavy rainfalls. Furthermore, exploring Raghbah, as the best remaining monument of historical Earthen Architecture in the Najd Desert, can greatly contribute to establishing a new lifestyle by means of the restoration project. The Earthen City of Raghbah restored can provide a convincing argument as regards the need for extensive use of Earthen Architecture and help set up a new, alternative, cost-efficient, environment-friendly, and sustainable lifestyle.
