The participation of medical students in prevention of COVID-19 in the republic of North Macedonia

Theoretical framework: The first positive case of SARS-CoV-2 was registered in North Macedonia on 26th of February 2020.According to the data of the Institute of Public Health (IPH) 134867 cases and 3940 deaths were registered until 04.04.2021. Methodology: The sixth year general medicine students,since the beginning of the pandemic,wanted to contribute to the fight against COVID-19 in their country.In the first weeks of October 2020,the numbers of confirmed cases increased to over 300 cases per day and because of that most of the positive people remained uninvestigated from the epidemiologists and consequently the contacts weren’t isolated. The Medical Faculty in Skopje and the Ministry of Health (MOH) decided to invite students volunteers to get involved in the fight against COVID-19.The purpose of their work was to contact the confirmed cases, contact tracing and enter data in the national database for COVID-19. Results: In this paper we present the results up to 22.02.2021.The 44 enrolled students were divided into two groups, each group for two-month tour.There was also one group of 25 students who were included in the COVID-19 clinical centers of the University Clinics in Skopje.26 students were deployed in the Regional Center of Public Health (CPH)-Skopje where they were assigned to contact the confirmed cases and contact tracing in order to carry out effective and timely isolation.While the other 18 volunteers were deployed in the IPH,beside the surveys,they were assigned to manually enter the received data from all 11CPHs in the national database.The second group of students,which started working from 22.12.2020,had small difference.That was because at the beginning of 2021 an electronic system was introduced by the MOH and all interviewers were connected to it so the surveys were entered directly and the system automatically sends the data to the IPH and the MOH.This system enabled timely entry of the surveys in the national database.In a period of these 4 months,out of a total of 73 056 newly confirmed cases,9070 or 12.4 % were done by students and a total of 16165 or 22.12% were entered in the national database.25 students at COVID-19 Centers were involved in patient care andtreatment, as a support to the health care professionals. Conclusion: The pandemic showed that students can make a serious contribution to prevention, contact tracing, building a database and taking care of the sick patients.
