Özet
Emojis have been a part of digital communication, and scholars have been interested in them for over two decades. This study aims to demonstrate the significance of emojis in communication by analyzing the current literature. First, the paper provides a brief review of the developmental history of emojis starting with emoticons and coming to current emoji use today. Then, it examines the scholarly literature regarding emojis with an emphasis on interpretation of emojis and its relations with digital communication. Examinations of emoji functions and the semantic variety in emojis follow the literature review. The analysis of emoji functions focus on the ways emojis are used, which found that there is a variety of roles emojis take in our digital communications. Additionally, the study examines semantic variety of emojis with an emphasis on the influence of cross-platform use and impacts of culture. and found that both of these factors contribute to the semantic variety of emojis. Finally, the paper is concluded with a discussion of the future of emojis, how emojis might respond to our communication needs in the future, and questions for further inquiry.
