Özet
Tunus’un iç kesimlerinde yer alan Sidi Bouzid’de seyyar satıcılık yapan Tarık el Tayyib Muhammed Buazizi, 17 Aralık 2010’da her gün yaptığı gibi el arabasıyla meyve sebze satmak için yola oyulduğunda, başına geleceklerden habersizdi. Zaten her gün, civardaki polisler tarafından tacize ve aşağılanmaya maruz kalıyor, polisler gelip el arabasındaki mallara el koyuyordu. Ne var ki o günü korkunç derecede dayanılmaz kılan ve en sonunda kendisine yakmasına neden olan olaysa, polislerin her zamanki el arabasına el koyduğu sırada bir kadın polisin kendisine tokat atması oldu. Buazizi, el arabasını ve mallarını geri almak için saatlerce yalvardıysa da polisler ikna olmadı, o da kendisini valilik binasının önünde yakmaya karar verdi ve Buazizi böylelikle Tunus Devrimi’ni tetiklemiş oldu. Batı, bu olaylara “Arap Baharı” demekte gecikmedi.
Tarek el Tayeb Muhamed Buazizi, a street vendor in Sidi Bouzid in central Tunisia, had no idea what was in store for him as he began his daily routine, on 17th December 2010, which involved selling fruits and vegetables in his wheelbarrow. He would face daily harassment and humiliation at the hands of the local police as they would come and confiscate his wheelbarrow of produce. What made that day totally unbearable, which led him to set himself on fire was apparently the humiliation he was subjected to by the local policewoman as she slapped him on the face while the policemen seized his vending cart. After ours of begging, out of which he could not get back his vending cart and the produce, he decided to self-immolate in front of the mayor’s office, which triggered off the Tunisian Revolution and what the West was quick to call the ‘Arab Spring’ events.
