    A multi disciplinary approach to reducing venous thrombosis in advanced cancer patients

    Venous thromboembolism(VTE) is a clot that starts in a vein and mostly occurs in the deep veins of the extremities (deep vein thrombosis, DVT) and can travel in the circulation up to the lungs ( pulmonary embolism, PE). A majority of cancer patients are at risk of developing venous thromboembolism and the clinical consequences of VTE in cancer patients is the leading cause of death, second to death from cancer alone (Khorana 2010) and are typically more costly to manage. This calls for a combination of a multidisciplinary intervention and antithrombotic treatment.
