Yayın Obstacles in the implementation of evidence-based practice in nursing(Maltepe Üniversitesi, 2019) Beltsou, Fani; Balafa, MarianthiINTRODUCTION: The international interest in the implementation of evidence-based nursing (EBN) as a means of improving quality of care continues. Yet, despite the emphasis given during the last few years on the quality of health care providers there are still many nurses who fail to understand that evidence-based nursing should be a clinical priority and hence, ensure its implementation. AIM: To explore the various factors and difficulties that hinder the implementation of evidence-based nursing in contemporary health care services. METHODS: For this paper’s needs a systematic literature search was undertaken in databases and websites such as Pubmed, magnet.gr, medscoupe.com, ebnbmg.com, and nursingword.org within the last 10 years, using combinations of the following Key-words: research, health care provision, healthcare professionals, theory, practice, implementation, evidence-based practice. RESULTS: After an extensive and critical background search, 15 studies were deemed as most relevant for this paper’s aim. These came mainly from the USA, Ireland, Australia and Greece. In these cases, it was found that although health care professionals are aware of the term, EBN, it’s implementation failed in many cases in practice due to the following factors (in descending order of importance): lack of time due to heavy workload, fear of change and resistance to evolution in the health sector, understaffed and poorly organized health care facilities, contradictory factors (e.g. conflicting evidence) and lack of suitable infrastructure. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, although nursing research has improved dramatically during the past decades, we should still strive to continue supporting health care professionals in their clinical roles. Although there is still a gap between recent knowledge and its implementation, the nursing profession needs to embrace EBN despite adverse working conditions as we owe this to our patients, our profession and ourselves!
