Yayın The effects of kangaroo care on the premature baby(Maltepe Üniversitesi, 2019) Güler, İzel; Bigzat, MuhabatThe Kangaroo maintenance model was first introduced in 1979 in Latin America due to the lack of adequate equipment and experience in the care of premature infants in Colombia and the increased risk of infection. Since the safety of infants could not be provided in the clinical setting due to hospital infections and there were not enough staff and medical equipment, babies were sent home within the first 2-3 hours following delivery. The mortality and morbidity rates of the babies sent home were found to be reduced, and the Kangaroo Care Model was started to be applied by the doctors and clinical nurses at that time to their mothers in premature babies.Nowadays, kangaroo care can be applied at different periods depending on the condition of the premature baby. Late, middle, early, very early kangaroo care is divided into 5. Kangaroo care should be applied as early as possible to the premature infant, as this results in better skin temperature regulation of prematurity. In addition, families expressed that they felt more intertwined with their babies during this practice. It was confirmed that the mother increases her milk secretion, has a highrisk baby, and was able to cope with stress more easily, and provided early milk production. It has been scientifically proven that kangaroo care is a safe method in premature newborns with stable condition and used in the care of premature newborns in many hospitals all over the world. As a result, kangaroo care can be practiced almost everywhere in the peripheral care units of very low-income countries, because it is not costly, and easy to apply. It is recommended in both rich and poor countries that the bond between mother and baby can be improved and can contribute to the humanization of premature neonatal care. Besides, it is an evidence-based application which should be applied because of the positive effects of Kangaroo Care model on premature newborns which cause positive changes in baby’s behavioral and physiological development as well as having a chance to communicate more effectively with their babies.
