Yayın Well-being and physical health as characteristics of victim and sinner in Kurt Vonnegut’s postmodernism(Maltepe Üniversitesi, 2019) Mengouchi, Meryem; Rahmoun, OmarThe works of Kurt Vonnegut placed him as a social philanthropist because he always expressed his anxiety and regret about the human condition. His works expressed his deceit and reflected the most traumatic event in his life, his participation in the Second World War. The traumatic effect of war was reflected in characters that are referred to as “loners” by critics like Kevin A Boon, for their isolation and difference which seems to be the only form of well being they could identify with. Others represent the figure of the anti-hero, a character who is beaten and blurred by things around him, unable to understand their environment, their imposed identities, and ideologies. The pressure is internalized by the character and affects their health seriously, both on the physical and mental level. The impact goes from madness as the only form of freedom from the constraints around them, to metamorphosis, ugliness, and paralysis, touching thus physical and mental health. In Cat’s Cradle he creates a religion and a whole language to restore well-being in a world devoid of hope and meaning. The characters are aware of the artificiality of the things that give them meaning, but they believe in them because they provide them happiness and comfort. He coined the word “Karass” to refer to a group of people that are connected spiritually and who reach a peaceful state of mind together. The modern definition of science as sacred and reliable gave it a position which is beyond supervision. Yet, inventions can be sometimes harmful to human beings, and their reflections on the scientist and his family members affected their physical appearances, making each of them look like a beast.
