Yayın The parent experiencing violence in childhood and the violence tendency of their parents: a qualitative case report(Maltepe Üniversitesi, 2020) Aslan, Tuğba; Sadeghi, Rana; Karataş, NimetBackground: According to the Social Learning Theory, when a child is exposed to physical violence in childhood, s/he may be prone to violence against his/her own children when s/ he is a parent. The purpose of this study is to understand the tendency and causes of violence of a parent who experiences violence as a child. Method: The study was done by the case study method, which is one of the qualitative designs. The data were obtained by conducting an individual interview with a parent who experienced violence during childhood through a semi-structured interview format on 25 January 2020. Written and verbal consent of the individual was obtained. Results: Case presentation: N. Ç., 44 years old, is the mother of two children aged 5 (girl) and 4 (boy). N. Ç., who generally evaluated her childhood period as happy, expressed that subjected to domestic violence by her father in childhood. The individual was subjected to physical violence by his father for tearing the money he had accumulated after he was not allowed for the music player he wanted to buy. The individual stated that the father’s prescriptive and authoritarian attitude influenced the parenting approach in childhood. According to her, although in sometimes, the strive regarding non-violence reach to achieve, it was observed that the causes of failed regarding violence were mostly that are the parents not knowing how to behave to children in case of the conflict and not finding solutions to the problem. In addition, it has been understood to used by the parent that generally non-recommended approaches, for example; as a reward; taking what the child wants and taking it to the market, as punishment; applying hot peppers to his tongue, depriving him of something s/he likes etc. The individual stated that violence was a wrong behaviour, caused to regret and involuntarily hit their children. After data analysis, it was understood that violence was an unsuccessful result of the search for a solution and was transferred from the family to childlike an inheritance. Conclusion: As a result of this case analysis, as the justification for violence was expressed as “the transformation of patients into impatience”. The need for directing parents to correct and effective solutions for their children was emphasized by this study. Nurses have a great role and responsibility in every step to be taken in order to protect the family’s integrity and to grow the child in a healthy social environment.
