Özet
With the increasing demand and popularity of English language, the education system in Turkey has also been trying to catch up with the demands. There are English preparatory programs in many Universities in Turkey. These programs are constituted in order that they prepare students for their faculty courses. While in some universities, the preparatory programs are obligatory in other universities preparatory programs are dependent on students' desire. Many students attend universities that have an english-medium instruction. However, due to structuraI and academic contexts, the preparatory schools sometimes are not sufficient in preparing students for their academic study in their departments. There are studies looking at the effectiveness ol English preparatory programs. Kırkgöz. (2009) states that Turkish students mostly prefer to study in English-medium universities in Turkey. English has an essential role in the professional future life. It has become the "lingua franca of the twentieth century". to the point that any literate person is in a very real sense deprived if he does not know English (Burchfield. 1985). A study was done in Turkey (Alıcı. 2004), university students in English Preparatory School generally think that they became skillful in writing and grammar. On the other hand. they state that they are not certain if they became accomplished in listening and speaking. The students also reflect that they haven't reached academic and advanced English skills, but they have an opinion in common, which retlects that English Preparatory School is necessary to gather basic skills for their academic English. ln the preparatory program, students learn daily English but they need to learn also technical English Vocabulary related to their department. Another investigation displays that English pre-paratory programs should consider students needs in their faculty (Ozkanal & Hakan.2010). lt is clearly seen that English preparatory schools are inadequate to prepare students for their facul-ties. Therefore, this study aims to find out whether impacts of english preparatory school are same on different faculties or not. This study has been done to clarify the relationship between preparatory school and academic success. The quantitative method has been used in this study. The instrument included a questionnaire that consisted of 15 questions that covered four main skills Ireading, writing, listening. speaking) and vocabulary sub-skill, The survey was piloted to 50 students and then revised with the help of two professors. The participants were 150 undergrad-uate students from three different departments in a private university in southeast Turkey. The participants were from the departments of English Language Teaching. lnternational Relations, and Civil Engineering. The analysis was done using SPSS 20.0,0 version program, The findings show that preparatory program5 have both negative and positive effects on faculty courses, Dıf-ferent ways or loci of teaching language are needed for different departments, Civil Engineering has the deficiency on all language skills and vocabulary. English Language Teaching students are good at all skills, but they are not certain about their adequacy on vocabulary, Also. lnternaIional Relations students get the benefit ol English preparatory school except vocabulary.
