dc.description.abstract | Snoring is a common symptom of upper airway obstruction with a prevalence varying between 3% and 12% [1, 2]. The most common risk factors for upper airway obstruction in children are hyperplasia of adenoid and/or tonsillar tissue, nasal obstruction, and obesity [3–5]. These risk factors are related to sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), which has a wide range of disease spectrum from primary snoring (PS) and upper airway resistance syndrome (UARS) to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) [6]. Although primary snoring is considered the most benign form of SDB and is not generally treated, recent studies suggested that PS may not as benign as it was considered before [7]. Snoring children have higher oxygen saturation dip rates than those in the control group [8]. Children with PS had a tendency for hyperactivity and behavior disorders and had poor school performance which are adverse consequences of SDB in children [9]. In another study, it was observed that 37% of the children with PS developed OSA in 4 years, and 7% of them had OSA varying between mild and severe [10]. | en_US |
