Özet
There is strong literature created by business schools studying why Silicon Valley is successful. This paper will not focus on an academic analysis, but instead anecdotal evidence based on being a part of the ecosystem. The paper is broken up into 2 sections and a conclusion. We will start with the History section, where we will speak to the background of Silicon Valley briefly looking at the semiconductor days, but mainly focusing on the effects of the Dot- Com boom of the late ‘90s. Then, within the How it works section, we will dive into risk, reward, and mentorship. In the Risk section, we will speak about the appetite for risk, and how it contributes to the types of companies within and the success of an entrepreneurial community. In the Reward section, we will speak to the exit strategies that the community needs to warrant taking the risk. Finally, in the Mentorship section, we will speak to the elements of the community that both create and sustain it. In the end, the reader should have a good understanding of how, and why, Silicon Valley companies have succeeded, and what’s required of an entrepreneurial community if they were to try to emulate this success.
