The research was conducted as a descriptive study to determine the self-care agency and influencing factors in patients who underwent heart surgery. The research was conducted with 80 patients at an education, research and medical faculty in Istanbul between April 15, 2023 and July 15, 2024. The ‘Patient Identifier Information Form’ and the ‘Self-care Agency Scale’ were used to collect data. The data were evaluated with the SPSS 25.0 program. Of the patients, 73.3% (n=61) were male, 96.2% (n=77) were married, 43.8% (n=35) were primary school graduates, 73.7% (n=59) were unemployed, 61.2% (n=49) had income equal to their expenses, 90% (n=72) had another chronic disease, 33.4% (n=24) of whom had hypertension, 48.8% (n=39) had previous surgery, 95% (n=76) were taking regular medication, 52.5% (n=42) were smokers, 20% (n=16) were alcohol users, 46.3% (n=37) had a family history of heart disease, and 83.8% of whom had a family history of heart disease. (n=31) It was found that the father had heart disease. The mean age of the patients was determined as 65.20±11.70, the mean height as 173.73±11.04, and the mean body weight as 77.21±12.85. It was determined that there was a statistically significant difference between the patients' self-care agency total score averages and the presence of chronic disease, type of chronic disease, smoking status, and alcohol consumption status (p<0.05). It was determined that the difference in the type of chronic disease was due to the fact that the total score averages of those with diabetes were higher than those with hypertension and both. A statistically negative moderately significant relationship was found between the participants' height and body weight and their self-care agency scores. The participants' Self-Care Agency Scale total score averages were examined. It was determined that the total score average of the SAC was 81.60±21.47 (min=43; max=121). As a result of the research, it was determined that the presence of chronic disease, type of chronic disease, smoking and alcohol use, height and body weight are the factors that affect the self-care power of the patients.
