| dc.description.abstract | The social sciences have always expressed an interest in psychoanalysis, and History is no exception to this rule. This article examines the psychoanalytical study of educational policies in the Turkish Republic, to better apprehend the question of why citizenship was created and the unconscious motives behind this. Analysis of the citizenship education textbooks used in primary schools shows that the ideology of the Turkish Republic is strictly modernist and non-secular in spirit. Rather than establishing links with the imperial past, it denies and overlooks it. This position fosters a sense of nostalgia, rather than the necessary acceptance and putting to rest of the past which lies at the root of humanist creativity. © L'Esprit du temps.
