The role of parenting is a task that the mother and the father have to perform, depending on the culture, typically incorporates the elements of bonding, discipline, education, general welfare and protection, responsivity, and sensitivity in the parent part of a parent child relationship. While Parenting in itself causes to stress for mothers and fathers, the stress level may increases according to the child’s disability In this research, the relationship between the levels of parenting stress and the life satisfaction of mothers who have a child with cerebral palsy and mothers who have a child with autism has been investigated. The factors of parenting stress among mothers were analyzed in three subscales; Parenting Distress (PD), Parent-Child Dysfunctional Interaction (PCD-I) and Difficult Child (DC). This research has also focused on how the level of disability affects Parenting Stress and Life Satisfaction of mothers. The subjects of the study consisted of mothers with children in early childhood diagnosed with cerebral palsy (n=50) and autism (n=48) who attend the private rehabilitation centers in the district of Kadikoy and Atasehir, Istanbul. The Parenting Stress Index- Short Form was used to measure parental stress and The Satisfaction with Life Scale was used to measure life satisfaction. In addition, The Family Information Form was developed by the researcher to collect the socio-demographic data of mothers. The statistical analysis was conducted with SPSS 16.0 for Windows package program. The data analysis was made by using independent sample t test and Mann Whitney U test in order to compare of two groups as well as Descriptive Statistical Methods (mean, standard deviation).Pearson correlation analysis was used to calculate correlation coefficients. The results were interpreted of p <0.05, p <0.01 and p <0.001 significance level. The results of the present study show that there is a high level of Parenting Stress in mothers of children with cerebral palsy and autism, and also a very significant negative relationship was found between parenting stress and life satisfaction. On the other hand, the relationship between Parenting stress and mothers' socio-demographic characteristics of age, marital status, and number of children was no significant.
