It is possible to say that food movements have become widespread as part of new social movements seeking solutions from different parts of the world against the problems produced by the corporate-controlled industrial food system as a result of the policies imposed by neoliberal global capitalism. This study covers food movements and related media practices that have become increasingly active in Turkey especially after the 2000s, such as food activism-based associations, food cooperatives organizing a new type of production and consumption, food communities, intermediary-free virtual market initiatives, pesticide activism, food-based awareness movements and the slow food movement. The research is theoretically based on the field of new social movements and new media studies. The aim of the study is to understand the food movement media in Turkey by examining the examples mentioned above. The basic question dealt with in the research is as follows: How do food movement initiatives in Turkey use alternative (new) media to create social change? The study was conducted with a mixed method research design in which qualitative research and social network analysis (SNA) methods were used together. Therefore, two basic data collection processes were carried out in order to obtain information about the research questions. In this respect, semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with the media representatives of the movements in the sample to reveal how the food movement organizations define themselves, the movements' media organization and institutional structures and decision-making mechanisms, as well as to understand the content production of the food movement media. SNA was carried out to reveal the media interactions of the movements. The population of the SNA was selected as Twitter (now known as X) and the data on the platform was obtained and analysed with the NodeXL program, an SNA tool. These analyses reveals the political discourses brought to attention of the public through the contents produced by the movement media, their interactions with other social movement media, and the relations and interactions of the food movement media in Turkey with global food movements and media. The research results provide important evidence that prefigures social change regarding food through the alternative and activist media practices of the food movement media in Turkey.
