Abstract
Olumsuz beden algısı ergenlik döneminde yaygın olarak deneyimlenen bir sorundur. Olumsuz beden algısı ergenin benlik kavramı üzerinde ve kimlik gelişim sürecinde gerçekleştirdiği benlik sunumlarında önemli bir etkiye sahiptir. Mevcut araştırma ile olumsuz beden algısına sahip ergenlerin sosyal medya kullanım alışkanlıkları ve sosyal medyadaki benlik sunumları incelenmiş, benlik sunumları sırasında kullandıkları benlik sunumu taktikleri keşfedilmiştir. Araştırmada nitel araştırma yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Yaşları 15-18 arasında değişen 119 kız, 175 erkekten oluşan toplam 294 lise öğrencisi arasından olumsuz beden algısına sahip ve araştırmaya katılmaya gönüllü 15 ergenin katılımıyla araştırma yürütülmüştür. Araştırmacı tarafından katılımcılarla yapılan derinlemesine görüşmeler sonrası elde edilen veriler tematik analiz yöntemi ile analiz edilmiştir. Tematik analiz sonuçlarına göre bulgular üç ana tema altında toplanmıştır. Bu temalar; (1) sosyal medya kullanım alışkanlıkları, (2) sosyal medyada benlik sunumu ve (3) sosyal medyada kullanılan benlik sunumu taktikleridir. Araştırma temaları, kendisini oluşturan alt temalar ışığında incelenerek araştırma bulguları oluşturulmuştur. Araştırma sonuçlarına göre katılımcıların sosyal medyadaki benlik sunumları sırasında takipçilerinin (izleyici) etkisinde kaldıkları, sosyal medyadaki paylaşım ve beğenilerini (performans) bu etkiye göre yönettikleri bulunmuştur. Ayrıca katılımcıların sosyal medyada yaptıkları paylaşımların gerçekleri yansıtmadığı ya da kısmen yansıttığı bulunmuştur. Sosyal medyadaki benlik sunumları sırasında katılımcıların on farklı benlik sunumu taktiği kullandıkları tespit edilmiştir. Bu benlik sunumu taktiklerinden yedi tanesi alanyazında bulunan kendini sevdirme, kendini tanıtma, örnek davranma, acındırma, saldırgan, korunma ve kimlik düzeltmesidir. Diğer üç tanesi ise bu araştırma ile ilk kez keşfedilmiş olan kendini beğendirme, saygı ve statü oluşturma ve gizlenme taktikleridir. Araştırma bulguları literatür ışığında değerlendirilmiştir. Araştırmacılara ve olumsuz beden algısına sahip ergenler ile çalışan ruh sağlığı çalışanlarına yönelik öneriler sunulmuştur.
Negative body image is a common problem among adolescence. Negative body image has significant effects on the adolescent’s self-concept and self-presentation during the identity development process. In this research, the social media usage habits and self-presentation of adolescents with negative body image in social media were examined and the self-presentation tactics, they used during self-presentations, were discovered. Qualitative research method was used in the research. The research was conducted with 15 adolescent who has negative body image and volunteered to participate in the research, among a total of 294 high school students which consisted of 119 girls and 175 boys, aged between 15-18. The data obtained from in-depth interviews with the participants were analyzed using the thematic analysis method. According to thematic analysis the findings were gathered under three main themes. These themes are (1) social media usage habits, (2) self-presentation on social media, and (3) self-presentation tactics used on social media. Research findings were obtained by examining the research themes in the light of the sub-themes that compose of them. According to the results, participants are influenced by their followers (audience) during their self-presentation on social media. Also, the participants organize their posts and likes (performance) on social media according to the influence of their followers. In addition, the results indicated that the posts on social media do not reflect or partially reflect their real selves and lives. Moreover, data revealed that they use ten different self- presentation tactics during their self-presentation on social media. Seven of these tactics, which have also been found by past studies, are ingratiation, self-promotion, exemplification, supplication, offensive, protective, and identity adjustment. The other three are looking attractive, creation of respect and status, and concealment which were discovered for the first time in the current research. The research findings were evaluated in the light of the literature. Suggestions were presented for researchers and mental health professionals working with adolescents with negative body image.
