dc.description.abstract | Counter is a logic circuit made up of a series of flip-flops that are used to count the number of inputs in the form of negative or positive edge transitions. The counter is classified into synchronous and asynchronous counters. The difference between the synchronous and asynchronous counter can be identified according to the flip-flops that are triggered. A Synchronous counter is the counter in which the clock input with all the flip-flops uses the same source and produces the output at the same time. If the flip-flops do not receive the same clock signal, then that counter is called as Asynchronous counter. In Asynchronous counters, the clock pulse is applied only to first flip-flop. The remaining flip-flops receive the clock signal from output of its previous stage flip-flop. The synchronous counter provides a more reliable circuit for counting purposes, and for high-speed operation, as the clock pulses in this circuit are fed to every flip-flop in the chain at exactly the same time. Synchronous counters therefore eliminate the clock ripple problem, as the operation of the circuit is synchronized to the clock pulses, rather than flip-flop outputs.
