Knowledge and attitudes towards evidence-based literature about intramuscular injections in pediatric nurses and nursing students
    (Maltepe Üniversitesi, 2019) Zejnelovska, Arzu
BACKGROUND: The administration of intramuscular (IM) injections is a fundamental nursing skill. Administration of intramuscular injection to children is a common route for vaccines. Pediatric nurses must be well educated and to have up-to-date information about the safe and evidence-based practice. Nurses may more often rely on their training, personal experience or advice of senior nurses, than evidence-based literature. The aim of this study is to evaluate pediatric nurses’ and nursing students knowledge and skills about the administration of the intramuscular injection, as well as their attitudes towards current guidelines. METHODS: An interview and a self-constructed questionnaire were used to evaluate nurses’ knowledge and skills about the administration of intramuscular injections as well as their attitudes towards the evidence-based sources. The interviewed participants were 10 pediatric nurses from the PHU Healthcare Center Resen and 10 nursing students from Higher Medical SchoolBitola with previously requested permission from the local ethical approval. RESULTS: The results show that nurses and nursing students use the traditional technique, and take precautions and safety measures in a similar way. Half of the nurses don’t follow current guidelines for best practice, while nursing students are more open to consulting literature. Nursing students are more creative and patient with children when it comes to their fear of injection. CONCLUSIONS: Use of the current evidencebased guidelines for IM administration in children allows nurses to practice safely. Both groups, nurses and nursing students, use traditional technique of IM administration, in a very similar manner. Our study shows that pediatric nurses rarely consult evidence-based literature when it comes to fundamental skills such as the proper administration of the intramuscular injection. Nursing students are more open to new literature and are more creative in their approach to children.

Physical and verbal violence against mental health nurses and nurses undergraduates
    (Maltepe Üniversitesi, 2020) Zejnelovska, Arzu
Background: Violence against healthcare professionals in the working environment is a significant issue. Nurses are exposed to the most elevated level of danger in the working environment because they give direct treatment to patients and assume a specific job. The impact of violence against medical professionals in the working environment is one of the most widely recognized reasons behind leaving the nursing profession. Methods: An interview and self-constructed questionnaire were conducted. Before the interview, the research was supported by the University and Hospital. They interviewed members were 7 nurses from General Hospital Ohrid, working in the psychiatric ward and 7 nursing students from Higher Medical School- Bitola. Results: The outcomes show that the greater part of nurses was subject to physical violence, while nursing students were not presented to physical violence as much as nurses. Generally, all participants were confronted with verbal violence, where the patients and family members were verbally violent. The most common manifestation of physical violence was being hit; this was followed by kicking, pushing and shaking. Nurses opinion about the reasons for violent behaviour is that violent behaviour is due to mental illness and substance abuse influence. Conclusions: Confronting violence on the job affects the quality of work, because of trauma and fear that the violence may happen once more. The two groups, nurses and nursing students, had encountered physical and verbal violence. A larger part of the nurses working in the psychiatric ward was assaulted by patients while they were taking care of them. Female nursing students were more likely to be verbally attacked than male ones. There is no precise method accessible to the medical staff to control the violence incidents at their workplace.
