Özet
Background: Determination of mean platelet volume (MPV) is a very simple and cheap method to measure platelet activation; it has been shown to increase in cases of ischemic vascular events. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate platelet activation status by using MPV in patients with Behçet's disease (BD) and to search for a possible relationship between platelet function and disease activity. Patients and Methods: We selected 58 consecutive patients with BD. The control group consisted of 30 healthy subjects. BD patients were classified as active and inactive, according to clinical findings and severity criteria. MPV was determined in a blood sample collected in citrate. The groups were compared using Student's t test. Results:There was no significant difference between BD and control groups with regard to the platelet and white blood cell (WBC) counts. There was a tendency for higher MPV in BD patients when compared with the healthy subjects. However, the difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.1). When the patients with active BD and inactive BD were compared, there was no statistically significant difference with respect to MPV (p = 0.8). Conclusion: Even if the platelet activation status determined by using MPV in BD did not show a statistical correlation with healthy controls, we did detect higher MPV values ??in BD patients. In addition ESR and CRP showed statistical correlations which may suggest a possible relation of platelet functions with disease activity.
